This autumn, as the crisp air of fall descends on the banks of the Potomac River, the parade grounds of Mount Vernon will come alive with the booming fusillade of cannon fire, the thunder of horse hooves, and the excited barking of George Washington’s beloved hunting dogs. Join history and experience one of the most exciting DC area events as it comes alive with the annual Horses & Hounds at Mount Vernon this November 3 from 9am to 4pm, a tribute to a traditional fox hunt (albeit with no foxes injured in this modern iteration) and a showcase of the horses and hunting that George Washington held so dear.
The Game is Afoot at the Horses & Hounds at Mt Vernon
Both an equestrian showcase and a mock fox hunt, the day’s events begin with a ceremonial “scent bag” standing in for the foxes of yore. As the lucky rider gallops away across the 12-acre parade grounds to spread the scent, you can feel the anticipation in the crowd (and the eager beagles and other hunting dogs waiting to be let loose). Once the “game” is safely away, the attention turns to the hunters: adorable beagles with highly sensitive noses. With a shot the hunt begins, and the hounds will quickly begin their pursuit… see if you can spot the moment the first dog picks up the scent! Watch in comfort from the mansion’s grounds or on a prime picnic spot on the rolling hills of the East Lawn above the gently undulating banks of the Potomac, and rest easy as no actual foxes will participate (or be harmed) in the 21st century version of this historical sporting. It’s definitely one of the most exciting DC area events!
A Parade
After the hunt, a cavalry demonstration and horse showcase will take place on the grounds. Watch as expert equestrians demonstrate the precision with which man and horse could operate on the battlefield – or the hunting ground. Afterwards, come meet your favorite horses up close and personal and learn about Washington – who was a renowned horseman – and his favorite breeds. You can even meet Nelson, the spitting image of Washington’s trusted warhorse during the Revolution.
